Mission of the Role:
As the South Africa Geographic Expansion Senior Manager, you are responsible for leading the charge for Moringa’s expansion into South Africa. You will build an end-to-end market entry strategy, bring decisions on the strategy and possible partnerships to the leadership team of Moringa School, and begin implementation as possible. This will require significant strategy work to determine how to fit our product and core competencies with the South African market, and what partnerships to build and leverage towards this end.
You will ensure the best quality implementation of Moringa in South Africa, including but not limited to: team leadership, hiring for new roles, determining the best way to work with headquarters’ teams in Nairobi, and partnership management.
Leadership: Fully own Moringa School’s Expansion Strategy for South Africa beginning with managing and building the partnership with key stakeholders in public and private sector. Manage internal and external teams, directly and indirectly, to bring Moringa School into South Africa and grow our market share. You will be part of a larger team to design and execute Moringa’s growth strategy.
Strategy: Lead and develop South Africa specific, go-to-market strategies. Conduct market analysis, due diligence, and other data analysis to inform our strategy. Contribute to Moringa’s growth strategy through constant strategic thinking, documentation of lessons learned, scalable process development, etc.
BD/Partner Relations: Sell the Moringa brand and our Prep and Core programs to partners in South Africa (and potentially beyond). Identify potential partners and invest them in our model, from government partners, corporations, foundations, and so on.
Partner vetting: Conduct due diligence on potential partners, identifying successful partnerships based on criteria. Consistently update our partnership criteria.
Negotiation and contract closing: Negotiate with potential partners and close deals. Hold partners and Moringa to the terms in our contracts.
Branding: Establish Moringa School’s brand across South Africa for potential partners in tech, education, government, and major corporations / business networks.
HQ relationship management: Work closely with HQ teams to successfully deliver Moringa’s programming, including creating and delivering targeted training, support, and management. Leverage internal Moringa resources to ensure that our best practices, models, content, and delivery are being delivered to the highest standards. Determine the best model for working with HQ and associated expansion playbook.
Quality of Education: Support world-class tech learning program by overseeing the well-being and pipeline of all students through learning and into placement.
Team recruiting and management: Recruit and manage local team members, building the best team possible. Create valuable external relationships that help Moringa scale and attract the best talent. Ensure that local team is aligned to overall Moringa School values and way of working.
Financial and data analysis: Budget, track, monitor, and analyze expansion and growth-related data, both financial and otherwise. Develop and maintain highly detailed budgets and timely financial projections.
Reporting: Complete quarterly (or more) financial and operational reviews and reports.
Others as required: Take on additional responsibilities related to Moringa’s growth strategy, including, but not limited to: exploration of opening new campuses, exploring and testing new models for expansion, etc.
Experience and Skills Required:
South Africa Experience: Experience living / working in cities in South Africa for at least 5 years
Strategy / expansion:
A strong strategic thinker.
Previous experience conceptualizing and implementing a new program, business line, or product.
Geographic expansion or growth experience in scaling up a company or business line.
Strong data tracking and analysis skills.
Partner relationship building/sales (especially international and pan-African):
Solid business experience, both in B2C and B2B sales and partnerships, and bringing in substantial revenue.
Good knowledge and experience of the tech ecosystem across Africa, with at least 2 years working in tech in some way.
Business and partnership development experience and skills.
Excellent communication, presentation, and relationship-building skills, especially fit for working with high-level decision-makers. Public speaking skills and experience a plus.
Understanding and comfort with signing and managing contracts.
Comfort and understanding of how to manage difficult situations, deal with crises, and message / communicate difficulties.
Project and general management experience:
Operationally-minded with strong project management skills and experience.
Track record of “indirect” management-- effectively being able to implement projects and business through clients, partners, or others.
Ability to toggle between being a manager and implementing/executing directly.
Experience recruiting and managing a team.
Training and education:
Experience, knowledge, and passion for education, preferably adult-focused education.
At least 5 -10 years of experience. More experience is preferred.
Will live and breath Moringa’s mission and vision. Will communicate what Moringa does with passion to others.
High commitment to results. Drive and determination to exceed goals.
Strong organizational skills, including effective time management and prioritization of competing demands/multiple deadlines.
Excellent interpersonal skills.
