Our Story

Moringa School was the standout winner in the education sector in 13th edition of the CIO100 Awards organized by CIO Africa in Mombasa Kenya. The CIO 100 Awards is an acknowledged mark of enterprise excellence and celebrates 100 organizations and the teams within them that are using IT in innovative ways to deliver business value by creating competitive advantage.

Moringa School emerged as top winners in the 2021 Kenya Edtech Summit Awards, scooping the following recognition from Kenya’s industry players:

• First Runners Up: EdTech Company of The Year

More than 225 students enrolled for the February Software Development class in 2020. We were so excited to begin this journey with them.

WeCode is a programming training initiative for women run by the Rwandan Private Sector Federation (PSF) – ICT Chamber and funded by the German Development Institute (GIZ). Moringa School was selected as the WeCode implementation partner from 2019 through 2021. In total, we conducted 3 intakes enrolling 136 ladies into our Software Development Course. 83% of the ladies who graduated from the program and reported that they were job-seeking were able to find employment as junior developers within 12 months of their graduation

We launched our very first masterclass on Supervised Learning, then shortly followed that up with a full Data Science Course launch at Metta Nairobi. Both the masterclass and the full-time data science program were a huge success.

Digital jobs have the potential to create significant employment opportunities in East Africa. As the “Fourth Industrial Revolution” progresses, it will create profound changes in the employment landscape around the world.

However, the extent and timing of these changes will be influenced by the particularities of individual nations. Moringa School and Mercy Corps commissioned a report which interrogates these issues and aims to shed light on how Kenya and Uganda can prepare for their own respective digital futures in light of both their unique national contexts and larger global trends. We tested a licensing model to MEST in Ghana and to Outbox in Uganda to increase the accessibility of our courses and learning model to new markets. This was the year that we also professionalized our management team to help us scale into the future!

Nairobi Tech Week (NTW) is Sub-Saharan Africa’s largest annual tech event for product makers, bringing various actors and influencers within the tech ecosystem into one space to exhibit the forefront of innovation and technology. Nairobi Tech Week primarily focuses on tech makers such as entrepreneurs, designers, developers, data scientists, students, engineering managers, and more.

In early 2016, Moringa School announced its first major global partnership with Xccelerate, a coding bootcamp in Hong Kong. Xccelerate ran our course with our high-quality curriculum, teaching methodologies and philosophies, classroom tools and more in their Hong Kong office, where one of Moringa School’s Lead Instructors was based and ensured the curriculum with the classroom experience matches that in Kenya.

The class ran from February 6 to June 2, 2017. The partnership resulted in 16 students completing the course with an average Net Promoter Score of 8.0.

As the student numbers were growing, we moved from Nairobi Garage to a short stint elsewhere, and then finally to our current home at Ngong Lane Plaza. This is also the year we launched Moringa 2.0 and had our first alumni night.

Our humble beginnings started in 2014 with just 4 students, one of them dropping out in the first week of learning. Audrey Cheng (Co-Founder, and former CEO) had to spend a lot of time in the classroom to ensure that the students had what they needed and the learning was going smoothly.
